Joan Hunn (L) teaching Shari G. (R) to quilt using the long arm during a Lady of the Lake Quilting Service class.
Learning to use a longarm quilting machine is lots of fun! Lady of the Lake classes are open to anyone wanting to learn or improve their skills. We provide a state-of-the-art longarm quilting machine and guide you through a series of beginner classes to help you get started. Then, you can apply these skills to your own longarm or make a decision to purchase one or perhaps decide renting is the best option for you (which we offer too -- see Machine Rental.)
Last year's class offerings are listed below; new classes will be offered Winter 2010 -- check back or ask me to notify you via email when the listing is finalized. If you are not available during these times or would prefer private lessons, just ask and we'll set up a time that fits your schedule. All classes are held in the Lady of the Lake Quilting Studio in Duluth, Minnesota. For more information, call 218-393-8576 or e-mail
This class prepares beginning students and rental customers for using the APQS Millennium longarm quilting machine. No prior experience is required. Topics include: Thread and batting types, machine parts and functions, loading and stabilizing the quilt with zippers, basic quilting tools, techniques and meandering designs. This is a demonstration class with time for each student to try out the machine. Handouts and practice quilts provided.
Learn to use edge-to-edge pantograph patterns from the back of the machine with the laser light to produce an overall quilting design; how to modify border patterns to fit evenly within the border space; and, what to look for when choosing pantos for purchase. You will also learn how to position and quilt single block motifs using the laser light. Handouts and practice quilts provided.
Custom freehand, especially feathers, is a popular quilting method because it is quick and easy. You will learn and practice several good beginner freehand designs for blocks, borders and overalls; learn the use of stencils and chalk guidemarks, and we will discuss choosing designs appropriate for quilt tops. Handouts and practice quilts provided.
Learn tips and tricks on the use of rulers to enhance your quilting designs. You will be pleased with how stitch-in-the-ditch brings out the piecing in a quilt top, especially for applique, and how crosshatching gives a handquilted traditional look to quilts. Handouts and practice quilts provided.
Come have fun practicing your long arm skills with other beginners during this day-long Play Day in the Lady of the Lake Quilting Service studio. Bring your own practice quilt, zippers and a potluck item to share.
